The exhibition Six Postcards presents a multitude of works and reactions by artists and authors, linked to Jolana Havelka’s call for any reflection on the donated postcards with imperfectly printed motifs of her work. The project is the result of a long-standing activity (since 1995) in which six of these prints were donated by the artist to artists, theorists, curators, students, as well as friends or neighbours and casual acquaintances of the artist. In doing so, she initiated the creation of numerous works – photographs, collages, assemblages, drawings, prints, paintings, embroideries, objects, scores, poems or sound recordings. Sometimes the postcard appears directly in the works, other times it is encoded into a new artifact. But the collection also includes various notes and texts.
What may strike us about this collection is not only the diverse authorship of the people addressed, but also their ability to connect them in the manner of a serious-minded play. The mail-art nature of the project opens up themes of artistic collaboration, forms and functions of communication, appropriation, participation and recycling, for example.
What impresses us about this ensemble is not only the diverse approach of the authors, but also their ability to connect them in the manner of a serious play. The mail-art nature of the project opens up themes of artistic collaboration, forms and functions of communication, appropriation, participation and recycling, for example.
The collection was first presented at the Postal Museum in Prague (2019), and two years later at the House of the Lords of Kunštát in Brno (in collaboration with Denisa Sedláková and Terezia Petišková). Subsequently, it grew to include a number of other visual, textual and musical reactions. The new additions will be presented in the Fine Arts Archive along with some older works. The exhibition thus seeks to show the diversity of the Six Postcards series.
